How to Install the IMCW2 Micro Corrector Head: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why Install the IMCW2 Micro Corrector Head?

If you’re looking for accurate gas metering with both pressure and temperature compensation, the IMC/W2 Micro Corrector is your best choice. Unlike standard CTR (Counter) models that don’t account for pressure or temperature fluctuations, the IMCW2 ensures precise readings.

With the optional Windows USB User Terminal Software and IMC-to-PC Programming Cable, you can unlock additional features like parameter adjustments, data logging, and alarm monitoring.

To put this into perspective, a gas meter with a base rating of 3,000 cubic feet at 5 PSIG line pressure would actually measure 3,941 CFH with a pressure correction factor of 1.317. This is why pressure correction is essential for accurate billing.

Where to Buy the IMCW2 Micro Corrector Head

You can purchase both the Conduit and Circular versions, along with all required accessories, directly from our online store.

Now, let’s get to the installation process.

What’s Included in the IMCW2 Micro Corrector Kit?

Your kit comes with:

  • Installation Handbook

  • Three M4 x 20 cup fixing adjustment screws (235748-1)

  • Four 3mm hex screws

  • Four stand-off spacers

  • 3mm hex wrench (Allen Key)

  • Calibration Certificate

  • 4” Buna-A O-ring seal (013491-000)

Step 1: Preparation

Before installation, configure the correct meter size and upload the settings to the IMCW2 Micro Corrector using the User Terminal Software (MCUT) and IMC-to-PC Programming Cable.

Installing the Software:

  • The MCUT software is compatible with Windows-based systems only.

  • If your computer lacks a serial port, use a USB-to-Serial 9-pin adapter (ensure compatibility with the latest Windows drivers).

Selecting the Meter Size:

  • Use MCUT software to configure the correct meter size. By default, the factory sets these up for a 3M meter.

  • The software also allows for data logging, alarm setup, pulse output adjustments, and unit conversions.

Step 2: Installing the IMCW2 Corrector Head

1. Shut Off the Gas Line

Ensure safety by turning off the gas supply before installation.

2. Remove the Existing Counter Head

  • Use a 5/32” hex key to unscrew the four hex screws securing the aluminum counter ring.

  • Remove the three 3mm screws on the instrument cup flange with the included hex key.

  • If needed, use a flat-head screwdriver to carefully separate the flange.

Removing The Screws

Check the O-Ring Placement: Ensure the black O-ring is installed in the outer groove of the mounting flange.

3. Remove the Pressure Seal Plug

  • Using a 1/4” hex wrench, remove the orange Pressure Seal Plug (P/N: 012261-005) where the pressure transducer will be installed.

Remove The Pressure Port

Step 3: Installing the Sensors

1. Lubricate and Install the O-Ring

  • Apply a light coat of multi-purpose lithium grease to the O-ring before installation.

  • Important: As of 2025, the O-ring color has changed from orange to black.

2. Insert the Three Sensors

  • Pressure Sensor: Use a 5/8” wrench head to secure the pressure sensor into its designated bore.

    • Ensure it has a black O-ring and is tightened properly to prevent leaks.

Micro Corrector Pressure Port

  • Thermocouple: Insert it into the thermowell at the marked depth.

  • Magnetic Pickup (061749-000): Insert it into the magnet well.

Step 4: Finalizing the Installation

  • Position the IMCW2 Micro Corrector Head onto the cup flange.

  • Secure it using the three 3mm head screws and torque them to 15-20 in-lbs.

  • Adjust the display if needed by loosening the M4 x 20 cup fixing adjustment screws, rotating the unit, and re-tightening. Careful not to twist the wires.

Finished

That’s It!

Congratulations! Your IMCW2 Micro Corrector Head is now installed and ready to provide accurate, pressure- and temperature-compensated readings.

I appreciate these instructions but I am still having trouble connecting to a roots meter with my computer. I am running Windows 10 on my laptop and using the MCUT software 2.0.1.4d. I have a serial to USB adaptor and still unable to connect to the meter. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the feedback. In the MCUT Software there is a button under Configuration that says “UT Comms Settings”, click that and under “Direct” you should see the Com Port that it’s currently trying to connect to (example: COM3). If you know which communication port your USB is plugged into then change the com port to match it. You can find out which com port the USB is using by going to Control Panel > Device Manager > Com Ports. In Device Manager you may need to click View at the top and select “Show Hidden Devices”. You can also make sure you have the latest adapter drivers updated for your adapter cable as a last resort. I hope this helps!

As of 2019, Dresser replaced the User Terminal Software Disc with a USB Card. P/N: 057446-080

We recommend using the USB software on Windows 10 machines or later.

Thank you for your well-done explanation, but with today off-site monitoring it will be appreciated if you have a complete set of solutions to transfer the pulse and corrected volume with CAT 6 cable to IT switches. Any kind of a compact solution either software or hardware will be such a step forward.

5M175 root Meter under 14 inch water column how many cfh is the out put same as 7 inches

    1. PV Team says : Reply

Joe, generally with Inches W.C. we do not worry too much about the pressure correction. But for a quick reference, here’s what it could look like:

      0.25 PSI = 5,056 CFH max
      0.5 PSI = 5,115 CFH max
      1.0 PSI = 5,225 CFH max
      5.0 PSI = 6,585 CFH max

Hi Sam! It’s possible that your MCUT software version needs upgraded. I would highly suggest getting in touch with your local distributor and they will better assist you with further investigation. Please visit this Dresser Channel Partner Network (as of 01/2025) web page and select ‘Dresser Measurement’ under the Product Line tab dropdown box, then your region and country/state.
